Henry Ford established KPIs for Ford; In 1926, Ford was able to convert iron ore into an automobile in 81 hours. Similar KPIs are still used to this day at Ford and many of us who drive vehicles have benefitted from this KPI. Ford learned early on, you have to measure, measure, and measure again. Validate your process!
Even large companies such as Coca Cola are constantly tracking KPIs, from the number of cases shipped to its growth in new markets. British Airways has a great KPI ‘turnaround’ story where John King, Baron King of Wartnaby, received a phone call each time a plane’s arrival was delayed. Delayed planes soon became a thing of the past.
